Six keys to understanding electrification in Europe

In the last years, how to tackle electrification in Europe has become one of the most ambitious challenges for companies and public and private organizations. But do you know what electrification is? It is a new technological paradigm, linked to the energy transition, to replace fossil sources of energy production (coal, oil, and gas) with electricity generated from renewable sources (solar, wind, hydro and geothermal, aerothermal, biomass...). The goal is to electrify the economy from renewable energies.

Why is electrification important? What are the benefits for the economy and the environment? How can Europe lead this global challenge? Read on to find out the keys to this electrification process on the European continent.

The opportunity for Europe and Spain in the electrification process

  • Leaders in caring for the environment and combating climate change: the EU is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 55% by 2030, in the so-called Agenda 2030. In addition, achieving climate neutrality by 2050 (Agenda 2050). Europe will become the world's first zero emission zone by this date.
  • Spain, the country of renewables: Spain is spearheading the European Union's energy transition strategy as one of the richest countries in renewable sources. From the wind, necessary for wind energy; to the sun, for photovoltaic energy, and the sea, for offshore wind production. Besides, Spain is leading a large number of research projects in this area.
  • The decade of electrification: the first two decades of the 21st century have been the decade of renewables. The next step and the new decade of 2020-2030, in which we are now immersed, is that of electrification, with the great challenge of accelerating the energy transition process as much as possible. In the EU as a whole, the share of electricity in final energy use is expected to rise from 23% today to 30% by 2030 and between 47-60% by 2050.
  • The deployment of renewables: the extension and proliferation of renewable energies will be the basis for achieving electrification, mainly in energy-intensive and highly polluting areas, such as: transportation, industry, and housing. The future lies in a Europe based on sustainable mobility, an efficient and environmentally friendly industry -as we propose at Ekhi -, and housing with higher energy efficiency standards.
  • Reduction of price volatility: by generating electricity from renewable sources, part of the dependence on fossil fuels outside the EU, mostly located in areas with geopolitical conflicts, is eliminated. In this way, the current trend of rising and falling electricity bill prices would be avoided and it would be possible to stabilize costs and anticipate cost control.
  • Next Generation funds for electrification: the energy transition is one of the main levers of action of these European funds. In Spain, almost 40% of this injection of public capital will be earmarked for a greener economy based on renewable sources. The challenge is to move from a polluting model to a cleaner one and achieve an electric and renewable horizon.

In this decade of electrification, we need to reimagine our cars and a new mobility. We also need to reimagine how we will consume energy in our homes and how we will achieve the efficient and environmentally friendly operation of an energy-intensive industry.

The solution is written in green, do not hesitate to be part of the electrification process in Europe!
