Ekhi develops a pioneering installation that will be one of the largest rooftop projects in Spain in the logistics sector.

It is a 4.5 MWp photovoltaic self-consumption rooftop rental and PPA concept for Caiba in Ribarroja de Turia (Valencia). The plant will allow Nuveen Real Estate, owner of the logistics warehouse, to obtain additional rent and Caiba to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 1,533 tons of CO2 per year.

Ekhi has developed a 4.5 MWp photovoltaic self-consumption project for Caiba, a company specialized in the manufacture of plastic containers, in Ribarroja de Turia (Valencia).

The installation, carried out on the roof of a logistics warehouse owned by the investment manager Nuveen Real Estate, is pioneering in Spain for two reasons. First, it will supply electricity to the high-consumption neighbor and will also be able to supply the tenant. This makes it possible to develop a MWs project instead of kWs, since the logistics tenant has little demand. Secondly, because there is no project in Spain with a subway cable connection to the neighbor, which is a technical and logistical challenge that Ekhi has successfully overcome.

The plant developed by Ekhi is one of the largest rooftop projects in Spain in the logistics sector, consisting of 8,150 solar panels that will occupy 21,238m2 of the roof of this Nuveen logistics asset. The self-consumption installation will allow Caiba to save up to 20% in energy costs, with an annual production of 5.92 GWh, and will reduce its carbon footprint by more than 1,533 tonsCO2eqper year.

The contractual model of the agreement is an On-Site PPA, whereby Ekhi will be in charge of installing and distributing the energy and maintaining the facility. The project has been designed as self-consumption without surplus for Caiba for a period of 15 years.

Carbon footprint reduction

After the installation of the plant, according to the study carried out by Ekhi, the plastic packaging producer will reduce its carbon footprint by 1,533 tons ofCO2eqemissions per year. This figure is equivalent to more than 12.8 million kilometers traveled by a car or to planting more than 75,897 trees.

Once the project is completed, with commercial start-up in November 2023, Caiba will be able to save up to 20% annually on its energy costs for the next 15 years.

Lorenzo Font, Managing Director Self Consumption at Ekhi, said:

"This project is an example of how Ekhi can get its electro-intensive and logistics users to coexist in an energy scheme achieving together sustainability and cost reduction goals through disruptive self-consumption projects, we like to do things differently from the rest.We accompany our customers in their energy transition process, looking for the best solution applicable in each case."
